Workshop Description
There has always been important connections between the ceramic studio and changes in technology. Often these technologies are associated with changes in production tied to industry scale and have limited application in a craft or art studio. The influence of digital technologies is potentially different for how a technology might change the way something is made but more importantly may change how a media is visualized or imagined. In this workshop participants will develop greater understanding and practice with how digital modelling software impacts moldmaking for work in ceramics. The workshop is geared towards a wide range of studio production types and individual making sessions will focus on the ideas and projects of participants. A group project will produce a collective object with contributions by all participants. The workshop is open to any level and will promote individual development of skills and understanding in ceramic moldmaking and the application of digital software to ceramic production.
Key workshop Highlights
-Overview of Digital modelling concentrating on Fusion 360 (free) and Rhyno (free trial)
-Application of digital software for model making and moldmaking
-Application of digital software for 3D printing
-Slip-Casting and surface techniques
Key Workshop Objectives
-participants will create ceramic work from digital models
-participants will apply model making techniques to creating ceramic molds
-participants will develop experimental approaches to casting and surface
-participant will challenge their studio practice and
-participate will participate in group work
-participants will discuss and analyze their creative process of making
Biography
Rory MacDonald is interested in the many roles for ceramics within the practice of craft, design and art concentrating on the development of new public audiences and spaces for contemporary ceramics. Central to his research is the exploration of the concept of public craft and the role materials play in shaping the built environment. He is interested in the intersection of digital technologies, materials seeking to develop new forms to connect digital space and ‘the real’. MacDonald received his M.F.A from Alfred University (1999) and is currently Associate Professor of Ceramics at NSCAD University and Chair of NSCAD Senate.
