Prenant ancrage dans la rivière Niger qui traverse le hameau de Way’s Mills et dans l’histoire des personnes afrodescendantes qu’elle porte, l’exposition J’ai connu des rivières présente le travail de Nathalie Batraville. À travers des séries de sculptures céramiques et des documents d’archives, l’artiste interroge les liens que les personnes noires créent avec les lieux qu’elles ont habités ou traversés et dont les mémoires ont été effacées. Créées en résidence au Centre d’art Rozynski, les œuvres qui longent la berge explorent des formes d’insoumission, de révolte et de transmission. Elles racontent les passages et les enracinements de personnes afrodescendantes, laissant émerger des savoirs botaniques et politiques dont les imaginaires résistent à l’oubli.
ARTISTE
Nathalie Batraville est une artiste et chercheure féministe noire et queer, d'origine haïtienne, basée à Montréal. Sa pratique comprend la céramique, le collage et l’écriture ; elle est aussi professeure en études féministes à l’Université Concordia. Ses œuvres interrogent l’anticolonialisme, le plaisir, la botanique et la rébellion. Cherchant à donner forme à un désir collectif de faire tomber des empires, elle retrace l’héritage des différentes figures et épisodes de révolte et d’autodéfense à travers divers territoires ; de Saint-Domingue au Congo, en passant par l’Île de la Tortue et la Palestine. Elle juxtapose différentes formes et traditions, et diverses cartographies de luttes contre l’assujettissement.
COMISSAIRE
Noémie Fortin est une commissaire et autrice indépendante basée dans les Cantons-de-l’Est. Sensible aux pratiques enracinées dans la pensée écoféministe, elle accompagne des démarches artistiques, agricoles et communautaires axées sur le soin du vivant. Elle concentre ses recherches sur l’art écologique qui sort des institutions pour aller à la rencontre des territoires et des communautés, avec un intérêt particulier pour les milieux ruraux. Ses projets ont notamment été présentés au Centre d’art de Kamouraska, chez Adélard, au Centre d’art Rozynski, à la Biosphère de Montréal et à la Galerie d’art Foreman. Ses écrits sont publiés dans des revues spécialisées dont Esse arts + opinion, Espace art actuel et Le Sabord.
